After or before or WHILE you’re exploring Winchester, run – don’t walk – to Espresso Bar & Café. Located in Old Town Winchester, Espresso Bar & Café is the prime spot to grab a cup of coffee, a tasty pastry, or sit and chill with your traveling companions for an hour or two. Step off North Loudoun Street for one of their specialty coffee blends, or fall back on old favorites like a mocha, macchiato, breve, or americano. They also offer the perfect baked goods to compliment your choice of drink, such as muffins, cupcakes, scones, cookies, biscotti, pie (in season), or pre-packaged sweet pops. Not in the mood for sugar? Soups, oatmeal, and breakfast sandwiches can also be ordered. Seating inside provides wi-fi for customers, as well as comfortable seating at tables for meetings or in plush upholstery toward the back. Wanna soak in the sun? No problem. They have spacious outdoor seating for those warm Virginia days when you can’t stand to be inside.
There are few places that really scream “coffee house” like Espresso Bar & Café. The ambiance is cozy, warm, inviting, not overly crowded and the staff are incredibly friendly. They sell bags of Ceremony Coffee Roaster grounds, as well as their own blends. I took home a bag of their “Thesis” coffee and thoroughly enjoyed it in the weeks and months following our visit on those evenings when I needed a little caffeine pick-me-up. Near their order counter, you can find an array of souvenirs and coffee-lover goods like kettles, carafes, and mugs with the establishment’s logo on them. Their breakfast sandwiches are HUGE with quite a lot of egg, which sometimes is a turnoff for me, but I really liked their ham and cheese croissant sandwich. The components of the sandwich stayed together, as opposed to slipping and sliding out between the croissant halves, which was a great plus for me. I wasn’t hungry until well into the afternoon that day. Their Mocha and Chai Latte were also incredible, adhering to the classic flavor formula that I know and enjoy. I loved the fact that they served our drinks in a proper glass and not just a flimsy to-go cup. It encouraged us to stay a little longer and somehow enhanced the flavor of the drinks too. Their chocolate-peanut butter bar was the perfect offset to their breakfast sandwich, pairing the sweet and crumbly with the buttery croissant and fluffy eggs.
This place is a straight-forward café that still has much to offer. It’s ideal for that informal meet-up with clients, a place to catch-up with old friends, or a respite to just sit and reflect on your visit to Winchester. It is the quintessential hometown coffeehouse and well worth a visit.
